The exact composition and strength of Delta are secrets closely guarded by the US government, however it is reported to be divided into 3 operating squadrons, which then are subdivided into smaller groups known as troops. Each troop specializes in HALO, SCUBA, or other operational skills. In addition, 1^st SFOD, Delta maintains support units that handle selection and training, logistics and the medical requirements of the unit.

Recruitment for Delta is conducted worldwide twice a year prior to its fall and spring assessment/selection courses. Assignment to the force requires an extensive prescreening process and successful completion of a 3 to 4 week assessment and selection course. Upon completion of prescreening and assessment, the soldier will participate in a 6 month Operator Training Course.
