1st Special Forces Operational Detachment, Delta

After returning from an assignment with the British Special Air Service (SAS), US Army SF Colonel Charles Beckwith created Delta Force in November 1977. Delta was created with the SAS model in mind. The 1st SFOD, Delta was intended as an overseas counter-terrorist unit specializing in hostage rescue, barricade operations and specialize reconnaissance. Delta soldiers are able to respond rapidly with surgical application of a variety of skills while maintaining the lowest possible profile of US involvement.

The exact composition and strength of Delta are secrets closely guarded by the US government, however it is reported to be divided into 3 operating squadrons, which then are subdivided into smaller groups known as troops. Each troop specializes in HALO, SCUBA, or other operational skills. In addition, 1st SFOD, Delta maintains support units that handle selection and training, logistics and the medical requirements of the unit.

Recruitment for Delta is conducted worldwide twice a year prior to its fall and spring assessment/selection courses. Assignment to the force requires an extensive prescreening process and successful completion of a 3 to 4 week assessment and selection course. Upon completion of prescreening and assessment, the soldier will participate in a 6 month Operator Training Course.
