U.S. Army Psychological Operations
The mission of Psychological Operations (Psyop) is to cause dissension
among the enemy's ranks, while at the same time convincing the local
population to support friendly forces. In addition psyop units provide
continuous analysis of attitudes and the behavior of enemy forces to
field commanders, so that they can develop, produce and employ
propaganda in a successful manner.
Psychological Operations support national security objectives during
peacetime, contingencies and war. They are a critical part of the
political, military, economic and ideological activities used by the
U.S. government to secure national objectives. They provide commanders a
critical, force-multiplying capability that can be used at tactical and
strategic levels of operations. Psyop is the dissemination of truthful
information to foreign audiences in support of the objectives of
friendly forces.
The 4th Psychological Operations Group, stationed at Fort
Bragg, NC, is the only active duty psyop unit in the army. It is
augmented by the 2nd POG and 7th POG, both reserve
units. The 4th POG includes a headquarters company (HHC), 4 regional
support battalions (RSB), an operational/tactical battalion, and a
dissemination battalion. These units are ready to deploy within days of
notice.
The regional support battalions are responsible for the collection
and analysis of psyop related material in their respective areas of
responsibility. The operational/tactical battalion maintains all
tactical assets and is responsible for all face-to-face operations. The
dissemination battalion provides communication, print and broadcast
support for the entire group.
